Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Glendale Humane Society. We rescue, adopt and love hundreds of dogs and cats each year. We couldn’t do it without our compassionate, dedicated, long-term volunteers.

Each year volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds donate many hours of service, giving hands-on care to animals, educating our community, providing administrative support and more. GHS volunteers contribute to the health and well-being of animals while working alongside others who share the same goal. Volunteering at GHS is a fun and rewarding opportunity for animal lovers to get “paws” on with helping care for our four-legged friends.

Currently, we are not accepting applications. Please check back for open specialized volunteer opportunities or for our next open application period.

Expectations of Volunteers

  • For liability reasons, we ask that all volunteers be at least 18 years old.
  • Dedicated volunteers make up the majority of our workforce and our cats and dogs need a lot of affection and care. Because of this, we ask that our volunteers come in at least 4 hours per month if working with cats or 8 hours per month if working with dogs. Helping out at GHS is a great experience; nearly all of our volunteers help out for much more than the minimum hours.
  • While people volunteer at GHS because they love dogs and cats, GHS volunteers have to be able to work well with other people. GHS isn’t just about animals - it’s about educating and helping people connect with animals.
  • For everyone’s protection, volunteers need to use the safe animal handling techniques taught in their required training.
  • All tasks, from cleaning cages to stuffing kong treats, have specific procedures. We request that volunteers adhere to these procedures unless a staff member directs them otherwise.
  • Once volunteers know their work routine, they are expected to work with minimal supervision. Following through on tasks ensures the animals and the public are receiving the best possible care and service. Staff members are always available to answer questions.

Get Started

If you are interested in volunteering with GHS, please follow these steps:

1. Submit an application. Tell us a bit about yourself so we can see if your skills and availability fit our needs. Our application is available during select times of the year. If it is not available now, check back in a few months.

2. Attend an orientation. If you match up well with the current needs of GHS, the volunteer coordinator will be in contact with you regarding our next orientation.

3. Get involved. While you wait, check out other pages on our website to find additional ways you can help GHS accomplish our mission.

Please note that GHS cannot accommodate those seeking to fulfill court-ordered community service.
